- America is building more chip factories than at any point in its history — and it has 33,000 fewer chip manufacturing workers than it did in 2023.
- That's not a forecast, it's the Bureau of Labor Statistics: 368,400 people this March, against a peak near 401,000.
- In the 1980s fabs solved the same class of problem for machines with SECS/GEM, the language every process tool still speaks to the factory host.
- SEMI is now writing the robot version, and it goes to ballot on 19 August.
Why this matters
The buildings are going up faster than the people are arriving. So the industry's answer isn't a hiring campaign — it's a communications standard. Deployed in multiple advanced fabs.
- McKinsey — the US needs roughly 115,000 additional semiconductor-ecosystem jobs by 2030, with about 67,000 at risk of going unfilled. Researched for this piece but NOT spoken in the video; included here for the record.
- CSIS — US construction-trade demographics: the average skilled construction worker is over 50, and for every five leaving the trade only one enters. Intel and TSMC have both publicly cited skilled-labour shortages as a factor in project timelines.
